Film: The Class (Entre les

Email:

The young bodies crowding "The
Class," an artful, intelligent movie about modern French
identity and the attempt to transform those bodies into
citizens through talk, talk, talk, come in all sizes,
shapes and colors. With their cell phones and pouts,
these bored, restless junior high students look pretty
much like the fidgety progeny of Anytown, U.S.A. One
difference being that these African, Arab and Asian
Parisians live in a country that insists its citizens
have only one cultural identity, even if it is an
identity— as France’s smoldering suburbs vividly suggest
— many of these same young people don’t feel welcome to
share.

While its power and intensity
suggest something more exalted, I suppose we must label
Terence Davies's newest work an "essay film," which is a
rather prosaic way of indicating that it's filled with
poetry and insight, arresting images and a polemical
spirit of erudite anger and magical nostalgia. Its
characters are many but finally only one: the filmmaker
himself.

The Olde Sandwich Towne
Festival is about celebrating Independence and Freedom.
During the War of 1812 Canadians fought for our home
while Americans truly united for the first time. It was
about Independence and it is worth celebrating. It is
also this very area that thousands of slaves found their
freedom. Those who journey to the festival to celebrate
the Underground Railroad often come as a pilgrimage and
as a journey of discovery.
